Blogs, wikis, podcasts
So I got the book on the 17th and got right into it that day. I started logging the pages I was reading, underlining what I found relevant and so on and now, 2 weeks later, I'm on Chapter 2!
Holidays are a wonderful thing! I did read another good book in the interim, for those of you that followed the Tour de France, "Lance Armstrong's War" by Daniel Coyle. A great insight into how the tour works and how Lance worked the tour.
But I digress. So far I'm liking the book. It's an easy read but it takes a fair bit of time to get through because I'm constantly going to the net to check things out or to try something, like this BLOG.
One of the things I have discovered is 23 things on a stick, out of Minnesota. Now If I can only figure out how to add a link for it...http://23thingsonastick.blogspot.com// That was easy! Take a look. It might me a road to explore if we do some tech focussed proD. I haven't explored it all so I may retract at a later date.
I'm also experimenting with how to get this out to other readers of the book.
1. Something Affirmed: Blogging still supports the need for students to read and think critically.
2. I learned what a blog is, how to interact on one and how it could be used in a teaching and/or an administrative capacity.
3. One of the challenges I see will be getting a handle on how this will impact teaching and assessment practices.
4. I will need to become more of a digital native vs an immigrant.
1. Blogging is as natural to our students as jotting something on a post-it-note for us.
2. It is easy to create our own blog that is easy to post to and looks good.
3. Creating and maintain a blog...I am going to try for a recipe blog.
4.More technical advice on links, security settings etc...
Something affirmed: Blogging is a process of thinking in words, not just an accounting of events. It combines the best of solitary reflection and social interaction. (taken from p 20)
Something new I want to try is... I don't know what to say here other than it's all new to me. Every time i post, I'm trying something new, from adding a link, to adding a picture to embedding a video, it's all new to me. And that's exciting!
My Challenge: Though I consider myself relatively adept with technology and the read / write tools of the web, I still have an immigrants "accent" when I try to explain something or even just talk about tech tools with my digitally native students. My challenge would be to learn the "language" to a level of fluency such that my "accent" is not a hindrance to communication with others.
What will I need? I have all I need in the way of technology at home (though a headset mic would be nice at school. Anyone listening?) What I need is to make the decision to make writing a small but important part of my daily life.
Good luck to all. I look forward to learning from YOU!
Something Affirmed: I am one of those people who have been procrastinating moving forward with the technology around us. I discovered at our session that I am quite capable of learning this. The Blogger site made it very simple to get going and has built up some confidence in order to keep moving forward.
Something New: At our session we looked at the Book Club Blog that Stephanie set up for us all to experiment with. This has been my first attempt at really looking at a blog, so it was very exciting to see our comments posted and read how others were doing. The book has been interesting and enlightening reading, but it is the actual participation that lights a spark.
Something to Try: I will now set up a personal blog and have some friends start contributing to it. Hopefully it will be successful and give me more experience with how to share information and what information formats will be most useful. It will be a safe way to learn (make mistakes) and become better before putting myself 'out-there' for all (students) to see. I have also been thinking about how to utilize a blog in the Career Centre. As I learn more, the more ideas I will have, I hope.
Needs: Like Judith said, I think we all need time. It seems to be the biggest obstacle right now. It may be something that I putter with during this school year and really put some time into during the summer.

4. What will I need
Something affirmed:
When invited to play in the computer lab, people are quite willing and able to learn by doing and to share knowledge with each other. My first attempts at blogs took place in isolation--not recommended.
Something new:
This was the first time I set up a blog for others. It wasn't difficult. Talking over the repercussions of the permission settings with Gord was especially helpful.
Something to try:
I'd like to try another host. I've hear that wordpress is easy and has some useful aspects that differ from blogger.
What will I need:
Time and further support from those who know more than I do.
Affirmed- blogging is not as hard as I thought it might be.
New- pleased to see that the steps to follow to create a blog are fairly simple.
Challenge- I'm not a person to be in front of the computer for long - so taking the time to blog is a real challenge for me!
Need- the help and encouragement of you guys to keep it goin!
Thanks!
CHAPTERS 4 - 6
REFLECTIONS
Something New I:
Each chapter brings something new for me. I knew very little about any of these subjects prior to beginning this book. I now find myself thinking about what uses I might have for each new technology we learn about. Love the idea of Wiki collaboration for classroom (or broader) projects and study-guides.
Something to Try:
I don't think that Wiki's are something that I will use regularly, but the RSS seems like it would be useful in the Career Centre. With a combination of social bookmarking ideas and RSS, this might be something that will keep me on top of new programs/employment and career info. I'm excited to also try Webnotes. I will also review this book many times, I think, and try more links and examples. Sally emailed us to let us know that Will Richardson will be a speaker on the Pro-D Feb. 20. It would be interesting to see him.
What will need:
I'm still feeling like I don't have time to actually put alot of these great ideas into action. I think this will be a summer project for me.
